Realism in English Literature In general, realism can be defined as the aspect of tending to lean towards being factual and practical on matters of life by representing things, actions, or social circumstances in point of fact, without presenting them in their conceptual form and neither without the influence of feelings or other artistic ideas. However, in order to clearly define or discuss the major distinguishing features of realism, it is best to discuss it under different viewpoints so as to get an extensive description of what this theory of realism in American literature is all about. The theory of realism emphasizes on objectivity and being indifferent, along with unemotional social criticism. In American literature, realism is described as a term that covers the period from the time of the Civil War to the 20th century-an era during which the realism of Twain and James was highly praised. Realism in America was therefore a 20th century idea in literature through which reflections of this era were portrayed. A time in which authors like Mark Twain, Henry James, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Ernest Hemmingway, Toni Morrison and others wrote literature that was dedicated to accurate description and a study of how the Americans lived in different situations during that era. After the Civil War, there was a fast growth in the economy and population in the United States. This rapid growth in the rates of industrialization, urbanization, an escalating population base as a result of immigration, general literacy, social equality and a rise in the affluence of the middle-class population presented a rich base for wri ters and readers who had the urge to understand these rapid changes in the American civilization. In defining the realism in the literary history of America, we refer to that period ranging from 1865 to l914, which has been commonly referred to as the Era of Realism in the American 1iterary history. Therefore, in defining Realism as a literary movement, it should be specifically located in history and not simply artistically labeled to escape being dated. Hence, Realism being seen as a literary movement, it should doubtless be limited to the age from the late 1840s to the mid 1860s. This implies that the theory of focus concerning literal realism of the content should be centered on the ordinary, everyday lives of the lower-class preferably. The American realist writers went ahead to build their plots and characters around the ordinary, daily lives that people led. In addition, their fictional works contained local languages and wide-ranging conversations that attached well with the community. Consequently, readers were ideally attracted to the realistic writers because they coul d see their own struggles in print. The American public had advanced socially, economically and politically and so they tended to prefer writers who plainly described the difficulties of every day life for individuals as opposed to the slow paced writings and symbolism of the romantic writers, which the public had come to develop distaste for. The way they did things in a native manner, the clothes that they wore and even how they talked described their lifestyle in a profound way. Mark Twain unlike James Henry wrote about people in the lower-class. Being the kind of life he had lived, he understood this class of people better as seen in his novels. Through use of local colorism, Mark was able to i1lustrate and shed light on issues in the contemporary society. The Gilded age, as Mark Twain commonly refers to as the period of American realism, was a time of materialism and political corruption in the United States. These elements formed ideas on which some important works of fiction on political and social criticism were based on. The novel Gilded Age (1873), which was authored by Mark Twain and Charles Dudley Warner, presents a clear depiction of Washington D.C. The scene describes fraudulent politicians and insatiable industrialists. The novels of this age characterize the beginning of a new twist in the American literature, with the novel acting as a vehicle of social grievances. In an attempt to describe a contemporary view of how things were in reality; writing was used to portray how the culture of the people and the scenic outlook of New York City had transformed in this age. During this period of time, the writers, journalists, musicians and painters had made a major contribution to the thought of realism in the American setting; they had actually come of age. This was actually a new kind of generation writers, journalists and painters who through their writing and works of art were concerned with representing the usual and common aspects of life in a straightforward and unemotional manner, which was assumed to portray life as it actually was. Their approach of treating matters that portray a careful depiction of daily life, more so by the lower and middle classes was partly influenced by the new city life of a people who were more urban as opposed to leading a rural life and partly by the works of older American writers. These American realists did believe that humanitys preferences and freedom of choice were constrained by the supremacy of outside forces, which influence our ways of thinking and consequently our behavior and personality. This was a new age and it had come with a new style and approach of writing and presenting other works of art. (Patterson) Henry James and Mark Twain are some of the renowned writers in this era and together they achieved to bring out the indigenous style in the realistic description of the land and social activities by using the colloquial speech style. By using this approach they managed to survey and use the fictional potential of the interior life of people living at the time. However, the three writers differed in their perception of what they termed as the truth in reality. For instance, Mark and William gave more emphasis to the general life of the Americans, while Henry gave more attention to the sub conscious elements of a person. Henry was of the opinion that literary artists should use words to explore the deepest extents of the mental and ethical nature of people in addition to examining the exterior of social life in certain circumstances. This made him a realist of both the inner and outer life, while Mark and William were merely realists of the exterior life. The contribution of these five authors; Mark Twain, Henry James, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Ernest Hemmingway, Toni Morrison to the American realism through Literature can be viewed as fitting in the realistic period in the American literature in this context. Samuel Clemens, commonly known by his pet name Mark Twain is famous for how he represented realism in his writing (1835-1910). His well-known literary works are Tom Sawyer and The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. In his book, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, his most prominent account of realism, he introduced a character Huckleberry Finn who is a mistreated and neglected thirteen years old boy, whose father is a cruel drunk. From Finns view point, we get to see the world as he tries to make sense of the social world around him. In the story, Mark portrays various societal formalities by representing the double standards of the civilized American society in every day life. Mark Twains style, which was based on a dynamic, practical and slang American language, gave to the American writers and readers an admiration of their speech that represented a new form of American fiction. Despite Mark coming from the interiors of the country, he was actually among the most important authors who managed to capture this unique colloquial language and the aspect of iconoclasm of the Americans in his writing. But in his opinion, realism was not just a literary skill: It was a way of revealing the truth and abandoning old-fashioned principle of life. Like other realistic writers at the time, Mark Twain represents life in a practical way. His mode of writing was hilarious, descriptive and one which incorporated the colloquial language of Americans with both slang and iconoclasm. Mark Twain is regarded as a major writer in the realistic period. Through his literature, Mark created the worlds view of the United States. Throughout his writing career, Mark Twain used the technique of humorous narration in most of his major works of fiction. In his accounts, he ridicules the pompous, self-indulgent old world in mocking tones. He developed his work by drawing upon the views and sensations of his childhood. He narrates about his boyhood ambitions to be the pilot of a riverboat. The episodic encounters of Huck and Jim present us with an illustration of the world in a social perspective by symbolically using the banks of the river and the river that runs through them it to portray our actions in the world, in a realistic way. In The Gilded Age, he uses social satire to explore individuality in a world of speculation and unsteady values, all in the name of getting rich, whether at the expense of others or not. Twain, who over the years had turned in to a disillusioned pessimist, he cynically described the human race as a lost society, which had become obvious due to individualism. Mark also uses the aspects of vernacular in the realism movement. His use of col1oquial words which are real and express in effect, and use of simple sentence structures makes his work very unique. He also uses grammatical incorrect wording that is characteristic of the spoken 1anguage. He uses this colloquialism to powerfully cast his characters unique in their daily lives in a magical way. The fact that his characters have different cultural settings indicates that they speak differently probably with strong accents, which is the basic ideology of local colorism in his work. Like is the case with Huck and Jim, who talk differently because of their different cultural settings. His use of humor is another element he uses to describe realism in his work. Most of his writings are comical and contain practical jokes. Most of his jokes and remarks are his exaggerated stories of his life experiences. He not only uses this jokes to make people laugh but also as a type of artistic approach of criticizing social injustices and mocking the romanticism genre. In the book Huckleberry Finn, Mark Twain uses the character Huck, a young lad who described as using the local dialect in scene development plays the role of narrator. The illustration of characters and story renditions are both comical and cleverly iconic. Huck is described as being illiterate and superstitious; however, he happens to have native wisdom and concern-instinctive trends that help him reach the right decisions on certain important matters. After running away from his cruel father, he meets Jim, a runaway slave and together they start on a long voyage down the Mississippi River on a boat. This describes how we are at times faced by lifes challenges and we opt to run away, instead of face them. During the passage, Huck meets members of different communities, which helps him overcome his earlier narrow-mindedness and he learns to revere Jim. The book describes the different classes of people that Huck meets symbolically through the river banks on their journey. The thread which runs through exploration after exploration is the aspect of human cruelty to others. The significance of mark as a realistic writer is the literary creativity he employs in his novels. First of all, the language he uses to write his novels is simple and direct colloquial speech. Secondly, the plot and shape of his writings gives his novels both a realistic and symbolic aspect. Thirdly, he describes how the human race is damned following the kind of actions and decisions wee make concerning various issues. Although Mark and Howells shared the same perception in describing the realities of life in the American culture, each of them had a different stress. Howells preferred to base his argument on how the middle class people lived and conducted themselves in life. Twain focused his argument on having people from a certain region take the center-stage in his stories-local colorism, which was a unique style in the American fictitious realism. Local Colorism was an extraordinary approach in the literary realism age. Generally, the writings by the local colorists were focused on the life of some small, distinct regions. This type of literature portrayed the characters from a specific time, which are manifested by its traditions, language, outfit and other odd customs that have failed to come of age through cultural pressure. The writing is done from a personal experience perspective, whereby they committed themselves to minutely and accurately describe the way of life in theses regions. Thro ugh personal experience, they depicted an exceptional environment, which suggested that the life of the natives was greatly influenced by the conditions of the environment. The works of Mark Twain and Hamlin Garland are characterized by this element of local colors of the people. Among his highly attributable works of fiction are The American (1877), The Portrait of a Lady (1881), The Turn of the Screw (1898), and The Ambassadors (1903). His works were mostly romantic narrative with well developed characters that were set amongst revealing social observations on political affairs, social class and status. Jamess literary criticism, described as the theme of the Art of Fiction. His fictional criticism is a crucial element of his input to literature. He argues that there is a propensity of the ambitions that youths yearn for end in letdown and disillusionment. Fitzgerald reveals that the failure of some chief American moral standards such as liberty, social harmony, promoting peace and good governance are elements which were endangered by the demands of the 20th century civilization. Ernest Hemmingway, who was also another author during the time (1899-1961) argued that death, violence in the World War I and the bloodshed influenced him to conclude that conceptual verbal communication was typically empty and as such a misleading element. Thee elements of having societal roots, and a community to identity with, which implies having a shared history is what these African-Americans have given up to adopt the American culture. Anybody who does not belong to a community is generally regarded as lost, while those who still hold on to their traditions and communities are depicted as having a high chance of surviving. The lack of societal roots and the detachment of an individual from the society lead to their being alienated. According to her, ancestors are also a necessary part of life for they give cultural information and a link to the past. They are supposed to guide and be concerned about our welfare like parents and grandparents. In her novel, The Bluest Eye, ancestors is one of the distinctive uniqueness of the black community literature, which they have actually given up for a more realistic and fulfilling life. The aspect of characters in extreme situations is also another theme Toni Morrison uses in her literature. The 1920’s: a time of autonomy and responsibility The twentieth century is coming to a close and it has been a time of sorrow, innovation, and progress. The decades have come and gone and with events like the civil rights movement, the world wars, and the roaring twenties this century will be one that is definitely remembered. All of these events questioned peoples values, especially the values of autonomy and responsibility. The event that is to be looked at on this page is the roaring twenties and how the governments and citizens actions reflected these values in both positive and negative ways. The areas of socialness, literature, The Mafia, prohibition, the government, and the economy are all areas that will be focused on to demonstrate these positive and negative reflections. The group members individually looked at these areas and put together information on the actions of the people in these areas and if they were autonomous, responsible, or both. The first area that will be discussed on this page is the social aspects of the 1920’s. Jen Manno specifically chose the areas of music, theater, youth, and the flappers for her concentration. The social aspects of the 1920’s strongly support autonomy and the ability to make your own decisions. The youth were governed by themselves and the "in" thing was to be independent and expressing your own personal attitudes. In the social realm, no one cared about being responsible, all they wanted to do was have fun and do whatever they had to do in order to achieve that. The second area that will be displayed on this page is the literature of the twenties. Liz Sobieski will reflect on George S. Schuler and his play "The Yellow Peril," "The Great Gatsby,"... ... this behavior and questions. If there ever was a conflict between autonomy and responsibility, it came during Prohibition. The whole idea of this period was the illegal shipping, buying, and drinking of alcohol, which reflects many's definition of responsibility and right and wrong. Theodore Roosevelt brought about the Square Deal and fought for what he thought was right therefore, displaying his ability to act responsible. The final topic that we discussed was the economy of the twenties and many invested in the stock market. Many thought that buying stock was there responsibility and the right thing to do however, peoples overconfidence in the reliability of the stock market caused many to lose many material things. Today, I'm going to tell you why I'm proud to share the history of the Soccer Ball and the love of the beautiful game. Ill. Most of you are familiar with the proud heritage that the game of soccer has grown to be not only in our country, but around the world. ‘V. Today, I am going to commemorate the Soccer Ball and the love for the beautiful game of Soccer. I want to share with all of you about our proud history and heritage, and discuss personally what working and living with you guys has meant to me these past three years. Transition: First, I would like to share with you the amazing history of the game of Soccer. ) Body l. Through out history, humans have enjoyed kicking a ball or something like a ball. A. According to historical references and legends, early balls ranged from human heads, animal or human skulls, to animal bladders. B. It wasn't until 1855, when Charles Goodyear designed and built the first rubber soccer ball. C. Since then, every four years a new ball is de signed specially for the World Cup. II. B.Due to their specialized training, the men of 2nd Ranger Battalion were chosen to conduct operations on June 6, 1944 during the Invasion of Normandy. ll. The Invasion of Normandy is arguably one of the most famous and greatest feats the men f 2nd Ranger Battalion gained notoriety for. A. During the Invasion of Normandy, the 2nd Ranger Battalion was split in two and sent on two different missions. Ill. One of these groups was send to Omaha Beach. attempt to complete the mission their country asked of them. B.They faced heavy gun fire, mortar attacks, and heavy casualties as they ran up the beach to subdue the German bunkers. IV. The other group of men were tasked with scaling the cliffs of Point Du Hoc to destroy 1 55 mm guns. A. These men scaled cliffs using grappling hooks and rope ladders while gunfire and hand grenades rained over them. B. Once these men reached the top of the cliffs, they held their position for two days against heavy Ge rman counter attacks while only a third of them were left standing at the end still able to fght. Even now, being far from my father, we still bond through soccer whether it be talking about games or when I come home and visit go watch a game. E. It is a ymbolic figure and representation to the best nations in the world 1. No other sporting event has the same impact as the World Cup.Entire countries grind to a halt to watch games. 2. Even those who arent fans can and should appreciate that the World Cup is far more than a mere competition. During the next year, hundreds of millions of people will celebrate a shared passion and, because of it, perhaps fret a little less over the things that drive them apart. That is a beautiful and all-too-rare thing. Even if we don't speak each other's languages, don't always appreciate and espect each other's cultures, religions, politics and lifestyle choices, â€Å"Goal! is a word that resonates Joyfully and is understood from Beijing to Bogota, Sydney to Seattle. No other sport speaks to so many. The game's cross-border, cross-culture, cross- division universality is what makes the World Cup so special, a celebration not of 2 2 players on a pitch but of all who watch them. F. Most of you are familiar with the proud heritage that the game of soccer has grown to be not only in our country, but around the world. ‘V. Today, I am going to commemorate the Soccer Ball and the love for the beautiful game of Soccer. I want to share with all of you about our proud history and heritage, and discuss personally what working and living with you guys has meant to me these past three years. Transition: First, I would like to share with you the amazing history of the game of Soccer. ) Body l. Through out history, humans have enjoyed kicking a ball or something like a ball. A. According to historical references and legends, early balls ranged from human heads, animal or human skulls, to animal bladders. B. It wasn't until 1855, when Charles Goodyear designed and built the first rubber soccer ball. C. Since then, every four years a new ball is de signed specially for the World Cup. II. B.Due to their specialized training, the men of 2nd Ranger Battalion were chosen to conduct operations on June 6, 1944 during the Invasion of Normandy. ll. The Invasion of Normandy is arguably one of the most famous and greatest feats the men f 2nd Ranger Battalion gained notoriety for. A. During the Invasion of Normandy, the 2nd Ranger Battalion was split in two and sent on two different missions. Ill. One of these groups was send to Omaha Beach. attempt to complete the mission their country asked of them. B.They faced heavy gun fire, mortar attacks, and heavy casualties as they ran up the beach to subdue the German bunkers. IV. The other group of men were tasked with scaling the cliffs of Point Du Hoc to destroy 1 55 mm guns. A. These men scaled cliffs using grappling hooks and rope ladders while gunfire and hand grenades rained over them. B. Once these men reached the top of the cliffs, they held their position for two days against heavy Ge rman counter attacks while only a third of them were left standing at the end still able to fght. V.Both of these instances give pride to the organization. A. These men stared death in the face and fought against it for the greater good. B. Despite being heavily overwhelmed with the odds stacked against them, these Rangers used their training, ingenuity, and courage to complete the mission. | | |This project contains information about activity of exercise which I will do with a service user at my placement. It will base on | |sociological and psychological knowledge and also current policies and legislations. | | | |I am student in a local authority day centre. My placement supports adults with physical and sensual impairment.The day centre | |provides range of different groups designed for disabled people. I have chosen an exercise group to my project to describe an | |individual service user. | |The organisation is registered service and regulated by the Care Inspectorate which was established by Regulation of Care ( Scotland| |) Act 2001. Trained and qualified staff works with the Scottish Social Services Council (SSSC) requirements. All service users | |within the placement are treated accordingly with the criteria delineated by the National Care Standards – Support Services. |Each service user in the organisation has his key worker, who creates an individua l care plan based on assessments and taking into | |account the needs and expectations of the individual. | |As a student in the placement I comply with all regulations listed above. In the centre I provide appropriate level of care and help| |in taking part in all available activities. Treat all service users with dignity, privacy, give to all service users choice, provide| |safety, allow realising potential and take account of equality and diversity to each individual. |I chose an individual who I named Mr X to the provisions of the Data Protection Act 1998 to mention that personal information have | |to be used in fully anonymous as awareness of confidentiality and one of a main principal of National Care Standards and SSSC – to | |respect a privacy of service user. | | | |Mr X is disabled since 2009 after when he had cerebrovascular accident (CVA) and resulting in his left sided weakness. Despite his | |disability he still lives in his own home and has a support worker.He is keen to remain as independent as possible but is | |frustrated by his poor mobility. He uses wheelchair fulltime and suffers from epilepsy and diabetes. | |Mr X grew up in nuclear family. He had both parents and sibling – brother and four sisters. His siblings and his mother still live | |and they all are in very good relation to each other. | |Mr X grew up in very familiar environment during his primary socialisation and values gained through this time transferred on his | |later life. He also had a lot of friends. Mr X was very attached to his family and treats closest people as the most important.As | |Bowlby’s theory of attachment says that through attachment to mother Mr X’s basic physiological needs had been satisfied in primary | |socialization. | |(Malim. T, Birch. A. ,1998) | | | |According to one of functionalists George Murdock theory that family performs four main functions. One of the functions is | |reproductive function relate to rising child ren and take responsibility for them. | |(I. Marsh, M. Keating, S. Punch, J.Harden; 2009) | |Firstly Mr X was attached to his mother as she was his primary caregiver while in his adulthood he directed his attention to his | |wife. She took care of him after the loss of his mobility. | | | |Eli Zaretsky, one of Marxists says that view of ideal family, detached from economic world is only illusion. He means that families | |are a source of cheap labour. In according to Mr X’s life I can say that he and his wife were also parts of the ‘family economy’.He| |worked with Scottish Water and his wife was a cleaner in local school and also as nursing auxiliary. They had spent mostly time at | |their work places which caused lack of time to spend with children. | |(Zaretsky. E; 1976) | |Now his source of socialisation is only his family, mainly his sons who he sees regularly. | | | |Mr X experienced feeling of loss. Firstly he lost his health through CVA and his wife which passed away two years after he became | |disabled. |Based on Elizabeth Kubler – Ross On Death and Dying research in which she presented five stages model by which I going to describe | |Mr X’s feelings: | |Denial and isolation – Mr X after lost his health and wife felt that what had happened was very unfair and hard to accept by him. | |Anger – Mr X felt that God does not exist because in other way the tragic situation would never have happened. | |Bargaining – Is a form of truce, begging and promising himself and God, trying to make a deal with the God. |Depression – Mr X gave up and became resigned and lack of motivation to continue living. | |Acceptance – Mr X accepts the present life with the supports of hisfamily. Also classes in the Day Centre give a new meaning to his | |life. | |(E. Kubler – Ross; 2003 ) | | | |To analyse a personal needs and development of Mr X I use PIES model of needs and Maslow's Hierarchy of Hum an Motivation. |There are four categories: physical need to improve Mr X’s mobility, intellectual need to through communication and reflects on the | |choice of appropriate equipment to perform an exercises, emotional to rise Mr X’ self esteem and strengthen his self – confidence, | |and also social need as interaction with other service users. | | | |Maslow's hierarchy of human motivation believes that to achieved the higher-order needs must first meet the basic needs. |During Mr X’s healthy life he was happy and fully satisfied. He had love each other family – wife and two sons so he felt | |belongingness and been attached, he was working so was independent and also received respect from colleagues. He had also very | |active social life. Mr X used to enjoy playing golf and football during his healthy life so he was very active person. He has seen | |himself as very sociable individual enjoying a beer with friends. He was leading successful life until became disable.The | |disability made him unable to do things from previous days. His motivation decreased and he became very frustrated. | |(R. Gross; 2005) | | | |I started my preparation to an activity with a consultation with a manager. I chose as activity exercise group and gained permission| |from the manager to perform the activity.Then I discussed my chose with Mr X’s key worker and also gained from the key worker a | |care plan of the service user and other significant information regarding Mr X’s background, family, health condition and general | |risk assessment. | | | |An important factor for me was a conversation with Mr X and eventually gained permission from him. I explained clearly to the | |service user how the activity will be proceeded. Through the conversation and observation of Mr X’s I learnt what he expects from | |the activity.Also I assured him of his right to choose a course of the activity whether to amend decision. I am going to abide by | |the rules such as National Care Standards by giving to Mr X choice and treat him with dignity and communicate with him in | |appropriate and open way. | |Thanks exercises he hopes to regain the mobility in legs. In the exercise group he feels is given him a purpose to get up of bed and| |the opportunity to interact with his peers in a supported environment. | |I spoke with the leader of exercise class about the course and the main objectives of group.Also the leader informed me that the | |exercise group will take place in main hall of the placement and showed me the room in which it is held needed equipment. | | | |In my placement is using personal – centred planning model of care. The idea of the model was created by O’Brien and Lovett. This | |model is targeted for people who want to change something in their life. The model also focuses on make individuals as independence | |as possible.Mr X has significant left sided weakness and he requires a high level of assistance with all tasks and activities. He | |would like to attend a local gym to work more on building strength on his left side. He also discussed with his support worker a | |possibility of using community venues out with the Day Centre that may have activities running that would keep him busy and involve. | | | | | |For my project as I mentioned I chose exercise group.Main purpose of activities is to keep Mr X as fit as possible, encourage him | |to exercise and more motivated to make progress in becoming back to his mobility. It will make him a lot of satisfaction and | |increase their confidence and belief in his own abilities. Classes also will allow him to be among peers to avoid allowing it to | |feeling of isolation. During the activity I will communicate with Mr X in openly and clearly as awareness of SSSC Codes of Practice | |and Human Rights Act 1998. | |To my activity I intend to use the appropriate music played from a CD and exercise equipment stored in a d esignated lockable room. |The first step will bring a stroller with the equipment and the preparation of music Initially, it will be simple exercises in the | |warm-up then we will use selected by Mr X weights, stretching equipment and balls. To carry out a risk assessment I will carefully | |check environment if there are any type of hazards such as spillages on a floor or other obstacles around Mr X and others service | |users, remove these threats. Also all equipment to be checked if there are any damaged equipment and remove them. I have to make | |sure that the individual took appropriate medication due to his epilepsy and diabetes. |I planned my activity on 19 of March 2013. The activity will take about 70 minutes with 10 minute break for tea, coffee or something| |cooling to drink in terms of the diabetes of Mr X which excludes sweetened beverages. | |During my activity I will use personal – centred planning model of care because the model let me focus on the individua l | |expectations and also let me be fully involved into the activity as Mr X as well. As a method I would be most likely to use | |Essential Lifestyle Plan of Method of Intervention.During this method is taken into account a health condition, communication. | |Health and safety of the individual is a priority as maintaining Health and Safety at Work Act 1974. | |In case of Mr X is very suitable to him the Essential Lifestyle Plan to achieve the objectives which is to give satisfaction to Mr | |X, being able to do exercises that will increase their confidence and belief in their own abilities I am going to be patient and | |empathic, also treat with respect Mr X’s choice in the type of exercises to underpinning Equality Act 2010, National Care Standards | |and SSSC. |To maintain Safe Practice during performance of activity I make sure that I provide the safest environment for Mr X and other | |service users, myself and leading worker.
